Parental Guidance is Required

Items you will need:

  • Black Shirt
  • Black Pants
  • Long Tan Rain Coat (or overcoat if you have it)
  • Black thick soled shoes
  • 2" wide Brown Belt (or tan)
  • Old Olive or Brown left hand glove
  • Old Right Hand Hockey (Lacrosse) Glove Bald Cap (Swimming cap might work too)
  • 2 empty frozen concentrated drinks cartons or 2 Large Corks cut in half
  • Fake Black Hair (or go to the barbers and ask for real black hair hehe!)
  • Red Face Paint Makeup
  • Red Dye/Paint
  • Darker Red Paint
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Cut the fingers and thumb off the left hand glove below the 2nd knuckle.

Paint or dye the cap and the hockey glove red. Cut in a circle 3/4" to 1" up from the bottom of the empty juice containers or cut the corks in half and use the large ends, so you now have the horns. Paint these darker red.

Glue the hair onto the cap where it should go and trim if necessary (find a picture on the Internet). Carefully glue the dry horns onto the front of the cap. You might want to stuff the juice lid horns with paper towel or anything that would help give it firmness but still keep it light. Do not place on your head until glue is dry.

Using the red face makeup, cover your face, neck, left fingers and thumb. Get dressed in shirt, pants, shoes, belt and coat.

Put on cap. Put on gloves. You're now ready,

Add accessories to belt as wanted (fake plastic horseshoe, round red buckle, etc.)

Spiderman Parental Guidance Required

Items you will need:

  • 1 blue sweat pants
  • 1 blue sweat shirt
  • 1 pair red men's slipper socks
  • 1 pair red gloves
  • 1 red full face toboggan
  • 1 yd red fabric black sharpie velcro

Instructions:

With the black sharpie, draw a spider web design on the gloves, slipper socks and toboggan.

Cut a strip of red fabric about 2 inches wide and long enough the fit around child's waist (with sweat suit on).

Cut 2 more pieces of fabric about 8 inches wide and long enough to go over forearm and wrist of child.

For the chest design, cut out a piece of fabric in a triangular shape large enough to cover from the child's neck to his waist plus about 6 inches. Cut a circle for the head to go through.

Now draw a spider web design over each of the fabric pieces, I used a ruler and drew lines straight down and then connected the lines every inch or so with an arched line. Draw a large spider on the front of the chest piece.

Use the velcro on the belt and wrists pieces to close the ends.

Items you will need:

  • White Lab Coat
  • Fake Blood
  • Fake Glasses
  • Assorted Accessories
  • Optional Grey or White Wig

Instructions:

All you really need for this one is a white lab coat that you can get at any uniform warehouse.

Take the coat into the garage or outside, and splash it with fake blood. Let it dry overnight.

Stick some plastic test tubes, a rubber rat, and anything else you can thin of into the coat's breast pocket.

You can get a wig to match this outfit or just use lots of gel and mousse to make your hair stick straight out from your head.

Wear a pair of wire glasses and you are officially a crazed lab looney let loose.

Costume idea 4 - The Wicked Witch

Witch Hat imageWitch Image

Items you will need:

  • Newspaper
  • masking tape
  • scissors
  • skein of gray yarn
  • black electrical tape
  • black paint
  • cardboard
  • tinfoil
  • 2-yard piece of black gauze fabric
  • black ribbon
  • 10 water picks (at florists for about 2 cents each).

The Hat:

Roll a tall newspaper cone (ours is 15 inches high) and tape. Roll up the bottom edge until it fits on your child's head. To make the hair, cut a slew of 20-inch strands of yarn. Cut a 6-inch strip of electrical tape and press a bunch of the yarn strands onto it.

Tape the yarn bunch to the rim of the cone.

Continue making yarn bunches until the rim--minus a section near the face--is covered. Use three sheets of newspaper to form the hat brim.

Roll in the outer edges, taping them in place, so that you create a circle with a rolled edge. Trace around the cone bottom onto the center of the brim, then divide the circle like a pie, cutting along the center lines.

Push the cone up through the brim and tape in place.

Paint the hat black. Cut out a cardboard buckle, cover with foil and tape to the front of the hat.

The Robe:

Fold the fabric in half so the short ends meet, then cut an approximately 7-inch hole for her head. Have your child slip on the robe; then cut a fringy edge on the bottom.

Belt the robe with a black ribbon. For fingernails, your child can press the water picks onto her fingers.

For spooky accessories, this witch is wearing a plastic snake necklace, striped tights and black lipstick.

Halloween Costume History

The tradition of children wearing Halloween costumes originated from when the Celts lit bonfires and dressed up during ceremonies celebrating Samhain.

Decked out in animal heads and full animal skin costumes, they proceeded to read each other's fortunes and tell stories.

The costume tradition made it's way to America and took on another form. On Halloween, it was believed that the spirits and ghosts of the dead came back to roam the earth.

People then wore masks and "dressed up" to look like one of the spirits to avoid being recognized as one of the living. Finding that perfect Halloween costume can be a challenging task and is best planned well ahead of time.

While there are easy costumes available in stores, it may be more practical and even realistic to try a homemade one. From adults to kids, funny to scary, here are some Halloween costume ideas and tips to get you started.
