Halloween Safety for Children
Tips to make street smart children over the Halloween period
NEVER eat any treats until they are examined by an adult at your home.
Why? Because the sweets could be out of date, not suitable for children, or they might not even be sweets or they could contain foriegn objects.
Only Trick or Treat with friends or with adult supervision. Don't go alone.
Why? There are many strangers about and it is easy to get lost.
NEVER enter the house or car of a stranger.
Why? Nobody knows who strangers are so they could be nice or they could be horrible, or they could be tricking to be nice, never take a chance.
Only Trick or Treat in the late afternoon or early evening.
Why? As it is brighter and people can make sure you are safe, and it is also alot safer to cross street corners.
Only Trick or Treat in your own neighborhood, and visit only houses that you know.
Why? Again never trust strangers and visiting houses that you know is the best choice, also you will have a better chance of more candy as they a likely to know you.
Stay on streets that are well lit and only cross the street at the corners.
Why? crossing the streets in the dark and between parked cars is very dangerous, because drivers cant see totally clear in the dark.
NEVER run across the street and always look both ways before crossing.
Why? Running across the street could lead to you be hit by car, and so can not looking both ways for cars.
Do not take short cuts through backyards, alleys, or parks.
Why? Nobody is usually around alleys and parks apart from strangers later in the afternoon, plus alleys and parks are always poorly lit so nobody can see if you are ok, so always be careful.
Carry a flashlight or wear reflective tape.
Why? So drivers can see you and you can see hazards in the street as well as other people.
Only trick or treat at houses where the porch light is on and well lit.
Why? As well lit houses are easy for people to check your safety, and will also prevent you from having an accident while approaching the house.
Carry a few quarters for a payphone so you can call home if you need to.
Why? This could be becuase you have got lost, or you dont feel safe or well.
Do not play with lighters, matches, or fireworks!
Why? As they are very dangerous and should only be used by adults, you could end up causing a fire or harming somebody or yourself if you ignore this rule.
